Calling for an Emergency or to Report a Crime
If you are reporting an emergency situation and calling 911, you will first speak to a dispatcher.  You will need to explain to them the emergency situation so they can dispatch the correct emergency services to you.  During this process, they will ask you a series of questions to obtain information to relay to the responding emergency personnel.  It is important to remain calm during this process.  If you can do so safely, stay on the phone with the dispatchers until help arrives to you.  When calling 911, please be prepared to answer questions such as:

  • The exact location of the emergency, including street address and apartment numbers.
  • A description of the emergency situation.
  • If there were any weapons involved, and if so, how many and what type.
  • Names and/or descriptions of the persons involved.
  • Descriptions of any vehicles involved, such as make and model of the vehicles, color, license plate numbers and any descriptive objects about the car that would help identify the vehicle.
  • Any injuries to any persons, and if so, what type of injuries.
