In Memory of Patrolman Dave Alcox

AlcoxDaveShortly after 8 p.m. on January 15, 1980, Oak Hill Police Department Patrolman Dave L Alcox was shot and killed while making a traffic stop on State Route 93, south of the Village. While running a driver license check, Patrolman Alcox learned that Lloyd Eugene Brofford was wanted in Jackson for writing bad checks. Patrolman Alcox asked Brofford to come to his patrol car. Once the two reached Alcox’s patrol car, Brofford shot Patrolman Alcox. After Patrolman Alcox failed to acknowledge a radio transmission, patrol cars were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon their arrival, police officers found Alcox lying on his back beside the passenger door of his cruiser, dead from a bullet wound to his chest.

Brofford fled the scene, but was located by other officers, who were then led on a pursuit. Brofford attempted to ram a roadblock but was stopped as officers opened fire on his vehicle and was taken into custody.

Brofford’s trial began March 24, 1980. On March 27, a jury of 12 returned a verdict of guilty of aggravated murder and sentenced Brofford to life in prison without parole.  Brofford died in prison while serving his sentence.

Patrolman Alcox was survived by his mother, sister, and brother.

A scholarship has been set up by officers of the Oak Hill Police Department in memory of Patrolman Dave Alcox. Dave was a few hours short of being awarded his degree in education from Rio Grande College and becoming a teacher. Officers and their families hold fundraisers and other events to raise money for the scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to a graduating Oak Hill High School senior furthering their education in the law enforcement or education field.
